Powerful Influence of Meaningful Decor (Episode #168)

“How can I inspire my family without being in their face?” Isn’t this a great question to ask ourselves?! I often feel like the family nag- reminding, lecturing and trying to help everyone reach their highest potential.

What I learned from Candace Hafen (owner and creator of Lemon Drops N Lilies- Home Decor Shop) on our podcast today, was that we can inspire our family members by the things we keep in our homes. Beautiful artwork, quotes hanging in frames, messages on throw pillows, pictures of our family in meaningful moments, can be brought back to our minds years down the road when we need those reminders most.

Come join us in creating more intentional decor for our homes!! Learn why Candace says, “What’s on my walls matters.”

Show Notes:

One way Candace makes her family feel special and inspired using her home decor, is the way she celebrates birthdays.

Here are a few ideas for how we can make our family members feel special on their birthdays:

  • Streamers and balloons on their doorways when they wake up

  • Create a balloon avalanche

  • Write messages on their bathroom mirror with expo markers

  • Write them a birthday letter

  • Make them a special birthday meal or let them pick a place to go out

  • Fill balloons with little notes. Pop the balloons at the end of the day to read them.

Now here is the trick!! You don’t need to do alllll the things!! Just pick a few special ideas and really show up on those traditions. It’s all about building memories and traditions with our families to make them feel loved and connected.

As Candace said on our podcast: “The mom who does all the things is scattered and a mess and not there for the moment.”

Back to school tips:

  • Have a basket or drawer by your homework space that has all the supplies you need to do homework: markers, colored pencils, pencil sharpener, etc.

  • Wall organizer with wall pockets. Each child has their name on a pocket. This is a great place to keep track of your flash cards, calculators, other items that child needs every day to do their homework.

  • Make clip boards for each child (also goes in the pocket) for papers mom may need to look at or sign, homework packets you need to keep track of, etc.

  • Keep books in the car that stay in the car. That way when you are running carpools, waiting for siblings at activities, the kids can get their reading time done.
