Teaching Our Kids Good Work Ethic & Sportsmanship (Episode #146)

Good Work Ethic - Sportsmanship with Kyle 146 - Helping of happiness insta.png

How do you teach your kids good work ethic? Sometimes I think if we only lived on a farm, they would learn these things by default. But then I think about how that means I would also live on a farm and need to take care of animals and large gardens, drive long distances to get places, etc. As charming and magical as it sounds in my head, I struggle with the idea of even having a dog for a pet. So that puts me back to square one looking for a way to teach my kids to work.

I try really hard to teach my kids work ethic through doing chores around the house and taking on big yard and home projects we can do together. But after talking with this week’s guest, I am inspired to try a more fun direction!

Meet Kyle Nielsen from @KNSportsGroup! Kyle owns his own business and is the ultimate entrepreneur. He tells us stories of when he was a kid and how he found creative ways to make money. He also talks to us about how being in sports can help our kids learn healthy competition and a work ethic in a fun way.

Hillary: What does KN Sports Group do?

Kyle: We are brand builders who work with clients to design, source, create, launch and grow their apparel business.  We bring value to groups of all sizes and scope from concept to launch to long term planning and sustained growth.  We're all about transparency, goal setting and hard work.

Hillary: What kinds of things do you design and sell?

Kyle: Hats, bags, clothes, anything in terms of screen printing, heat press or embroidery. There isn’t much we say no to. If you really need a certain thing you can’t find somewhere else, come see us!

Hillary: Have you always been an entrepreneur?

Kyle: I remember as a 5th grader I was coveting these nutty bars (at school lunch) so bad, that caused me to go find 50 cents on my own. My sister taught me how to make beanies on a loom, I made bracelets and other handmade things - working really hard- to make money for those nutty bars. That was the genesis of how it all got started. That got my entrepreneurial spirit going.

Hillary: Tell us about your piano teaching business when you were a kid.

Kyle: The only way I had to get around was using my skateboard. So I had my route and all the books, theory and stickers in my backpack and rode around the neighborhood to my different students’ houses. I probably had 10-12 different jobs in high school.

Kyle has brought this same spirit into his parenting. One day his young son came to him wanting uniforms for the neighborhood kids to play sports together. Kyle encouraged his son to earn $23 and he’d supply those shirts to all the kids. So, his son and their little buddies made paper airplanes and sold them all through the neighborhood to make money for the jerseys.

Kyle has a huge passion for youth sports. He played sports in high school and college and it has always been a big part of his life. He has always identified himself as an athlete and as he transitioned into fatherhood, he wanted to find a way to expose his kids and their friends to as many sports and fun activities as he could.

He wants to take down as many barriers of entry to his kids and their friends with sports. He creates a like minded group of families and kids to help them get into a bunch of different sports. He’s been amazing in the community and has held free clinics for kids to come to and learn how to play different sports.
