fun activities for earth day insta 1.png

When I was a kid, I never thought of Earth Day as much fun. I think we planted a tree and called it a day. Now that I am older, I think planting a tree is awesome, and it definitely made our list. But with just a little bit of effort, there are so many other fun things we can do to celebrate! We love incorporating these activities all throughout the year.

We have a FREE printable of 20 fun ideas for you. Make sure you don’t miss that in this post! Also, if you want some more specific, in depth ideas for moving towards zero waste, check out this podcast: Baby Steps Towards Waste Reduction in Our Homes.

Our Favorites:

  • Tour a recycling plant!! We had so much fun doing this. You will have to check with the recycling plant in your area to see what they offer. During the summer a few years ago, we gathered up some friends and took a tour together. It was great for the kids to see why you don’t stick diapers and other garbage in the recycle box, to see where everything ends up, and what they can do with recycled products. I learned a ton and was more careful afterwards.

  • Plant a garden!! We have loved working our vegetable garden as a family. Here is a post and also a podcast that goes deeper into why this has been so awesome for our kids.

  • Make some rock art! Rock art can be so much fun!! Our kids have loved watching these tutorials by Patti Rockus. She not only shows you how to create some neat things with rocks, she teaches how to pick out some basic rocks that will be useful for many different art depictions. We also had Patti on our podcast where she tells her story about how she got into rock art.

  • Bring a plant to a friend!! We are are always encouraging our children to give service to others. I remember as a little girl, my mom would buy up a bunch of flowers on May Day (May 1st) and we would go around delivering them to people my mom wanted to share some extra love to before school. For more ideas of little acts of service to do with your kids, listen to this!

  • Take a nature walk or go for a bike ride!! This can be especially fun when the sun is rising or setting. We love doing this in the summer when the lightning bugs are out. We strap some glow sticks around their necks and arms and play as the sun is going down. Bubbles at sunset are also magical!!

  • Join a Nature’s Art Club! We have been a part of Lily & Thistle’s Nature’s Art Club for the past couple years and have LOVED it!! Every month and every season there are more art projects, little facts and poetry added for you to enjoy. It’s an awesome activity on a rainy day or when your kids are bored around the house. l actually love doing it as much as my kids do. It’s really fun to do together. For an inspiring podcast for why it is important for Moms to have an art habit, listen to this episode with Hannah Stevenson Creator of Lily & Thistle.
